米国科学振興協会（American Association for the Advancement of Science：AAAS）は2017年11月20日、「2017年AAASフェロー（2017 AAAS Fellows）」として日本人2人を含む396人を選出したことを発表した。
 
新たに選出されたフェローは、2018年2月17日にテキサス州オースティンにて開催される2018年AAAS年次総会のフェロー・フォーラム（Fellows Forum）において表彰される。
 
AAAS会員がフェローに選出されるには、AAASの24部門の運営グループによる推薦、当該会員が所属する研究機関とは無関係の会員2人を含むAAAS現会員3人以上からの推薦、もしくは、AAAS最高責任者からの推薦を受けることと、当該年の年末時点で4年以上継続してAAAS会員であることが条件とされている。その後、各部門の運営グループが候補者の審査を行い、最終候補者リストがAAAS委員会（AAAS Council）に提出され、そこでの投票によって最終的に決定される。
 
今回選出されたフェローの部門別内訳は、以下の通りである。

• 人類学部門（Section on Anthropology）7人
• 天文学部門（Section on Astronomy）7人
• 大気・水圏科学部門（Section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences）10人
• 生物科学部門（Section on Biological Sciences）東京工業大学の大隅良典氏を含む106人
• 化学部門（Section on Chemistry）46人
• 歯科学部門（Section on Dentistry and Oral Health Science）カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校の西村一郎氏を含む4人
• 教育学部門（Section on Education）8人
• 工学部門（Section on Engineering）28人
• 科学工学総合部門（Section on General Interest In Science and Engineering）5人
• 地質学・地理学部門（Section on Geology & Geography）15人
