教育省（Department of Education）は2016年10月6日、世界共通語、文化理解、地域・国際問題、及び、研究に関する米国の教育を強化するために、総額7,100万ドル超を助成することを発表した。本助成は、フルブライト・ヘイズ法（Fulbright-Hays Act）と1965年高等教育法第6条（Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965）の下で支給されるもので、教育省高等教育局（Office of Postsecondary Education）の国際・外国語教育室（International and Foreign Language Education Office：IFLE）が管理する。今回の助成の内訳は、①フルブライト・ヘイズ短期海外グループプロジェクト助成（Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Short-Term Award）として、バージニア州立大学（Virginia State University）を含む20組織に総額177万2,439ドル、②フルブライト・ヘイズ長期海外グループプロジェクト助成（Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Long-Term Award）として、ジョージア大学（University of Georgia）を含む6組織に総額102万ドル、③フルブライト・ヘイズ博士論文海外研究助成（Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad）として、アリゾナ大学（University of Arizona）を含む37組織に総額346万7,676ドル、④高等教育法第6条海外研究センター助成（Title VI American Overseas Research Centers Award）として、米国パキスタン研究所（American Institute of Pakistan Studies、パキスタン）を含む10組織に総額65万ドル、⑤高等教育法第6条学士課程国際関係・外国語助成（Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Award）として、サンタモニカ大学（Santa Monica College、カリフォルニア州）を含む32組織に総額282万1,720ドル、⑥非競争継続助成（Non-Competing Continuation Grant）として、外国語・地域研究フェローシップ（Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships：FLAS）を含む5組織に総額6,107万5,271ドル、となっている。
